It is a really interesting and charming tradition, and I am nowhere near as cynical about it as this post may have come across, as far as you know. However, to answer your question, no, biodegradability seems to be low on the list of Martenitsa requirements, so it is not unusual to come across specimens from Marches past, typically looking a little the worse for having spent some unknown number of seasons lashed to a cherry tree in all weather.

They’re biodegradable, I hope. Or do some trees still have their paraphernalia from Martenitsi 1975?

That piece is very Dad, I agree. No doubt he is the one who originally sent it to me. I wonder if any copy of his famous “had we camels” letter to that insurance company survives anywhere? Check your archives, would you, Gaoo?

What is up with that whole death thing? People’s parents don’t die, for Christ’s sake. Those unimaginably old ages of your son’s imagination sound an awful lot like the age you are now….

I am a big fan of that novella and happy that I'll be teaching it again in a couple of months. I never read it in Spanish and probably should. The post title is meant as a nod to both Garcia Marquez and Spy magazine.

My Colombian Spanish teacher had us read Crónica de una Muerte Anunciada. It’s pretty bizarre.
